When planning an underwater expedition off the coast of East Africa, the pristine waters surrounding our spice island of Zanzibar offer some of the most biodiverse and visually stunning marine ecosystems in the Indian Ocean. Diving and snorkeling enthusiasts are continually drawn to its crystalline blue waters, which are home to thriving coral gardens, dramatic deep-water drop-offs, and an astonishing variety of aquatic life.

To help our visitors navigate these world-class aquatic environments, the following comprehensive guide details the key dive destinations in our north Zanzibar and Mnemba, alongside the unique marine species that inhabit each location. Leven Bank, Mbwangawa, Mnemba Island, Shane’s Reef, Tumbatu Island Site offer up to 40 meters Max Depth from 2 meter .

Tumbatu Island & Surrounding Sites

Situated off the northwest coast of Unguja (Zanzibar’s main island), Tumbatu Island is encircled by a thriving ring of coral reefs and sheltered shallow bays. It is widely recognized as a sanctuary for rare macro life and cryptic species that are difficult to spot elsewhere. like FROG FISH TURTLES and STINGRAYS

• Key Sites: Ras Misikitini, Mwana Wa Mwana, and Shetani.
• Special Fish & Marine Life: Large seahorses (Hippocampus), rare leaf-fish, ghost pipefish, Spanish dancers, massive green sea turtles, giant groupers, honeycomb moray eels, blue-spotted stingrays, and dozens of vibrant nudibranch species.

Mnemba Island (Mnemba Atoll Protected Area)

Often regarded as the crown jewel of Tanzanian diving, the marine conservation area around Mnemba features exceptional water clarity—frequently exceeding 30 meters—and a dramatic mix of shallow coral carpets and plunging vertical walls.

• Key Sites: Kichwani, Wattabomi (Eel City), The Small Wall. Groupers, Channel reef.
• Special Fish & Marine Life: Bottlenose dolphins, green turtles, Spanish hogfish, dragon moray eels, white-tip reef sharks, Napoleon wrasse, giant bluefin trevallies, garden eels, and seasonal visits and humpback whales (July to November).

Shane’s Reef (Nungwi)

Located to the northwest of Zanzibar, Shane’s Reef is a designated macro-photography haven and one of the finest shallow dive sites for encountering fascinating bottom-dwellers and nocturnal marine life.

• Special Fish & Marine Life: Weedy scorpionfish, frogfish, seahorses, mantis shrimp, black-blotched porcupinefish, spot-wing flying gurnards, crocodile fish, and cuttlefish during night dives.

Mbwangawa

Positioned to the northeast of Zanzibar, Mbwangawa offers a relaxing, gentle drift dive along an extensive coral shelf that blends hard and soft coral gardens with expansive plate coral formations.

• Special Fish & Marine Life: Reef groupers, stingrays, scorpionfish, guitarfish, stonefish, resting sea turtles, and schools of colorful anthias and sweetlips.

Other Notable Northern Zanzibar Dive Sites

• Leven Bank: Situated further north in the Pemba Channel, this open-sea undersea mountain rises up to 14 meters from profound depths. Due to strong currents, it is reserved for expert divers seeking pelagic encounters with large tunas, barracudas, kingfish, and rainbow runners.
• Nankivell Rock & Hunga Reef: Twin open-sea reef formations featuring towering coral bommies, incredible visibility, and massive swirling schools of yellow-banded snappers, unicornfish, batfish, and occasional eagle rays.
